The descriptions and topics of this course change from semester-to-semester, as well as from instructor-to-instructor. Prerequisites: varies with the topic offered. ARTS 490 COLLAGE AND ASSEMBLAGE. In the early years of the 20th century Picasso changed art practice forever when he glued a commercially printed piece of oilcloth onto a painted surface. Artists suddely were free to experiment with any material or printed image that suited their purposes. In this class students will continue this legacy by making work in a variety of materials and techniques, limited only by their imagination and experimentation. They will create projects in collage, 3-D assemblage and appropriation. Students should have taken at least two 200-level and one 300-level art class. This course counts as upper level requirements in the Visual Arts major. ARTS 490 AFRICAN PAINTING. This is a special course, to be only offered once, by Visiting Artist/Professor Benjamin Offei-Nyako from the Kwame Nkrumah Institute for Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana. This is a unique opportunity to study the philosophy, theories and practice of contemporary art, especially painting and drawing as it has evolved in Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, and other African countries. Students will learn about religious painting traditions and the use of Akan and other symbolic visual language in order to apply the wisdom and knowledge of naturalistic paintings into their own work. ARTS 490 THE ARTIST BOOK. Artist's books (often one of a kind art objects) have been an important format for graphic designers, painters, photographers and others in the 20th century Avante Garde art movements. This studio course will involve students in research, design and production of the artist's book. All medias can be utilized including relief sculpture, collage, drawing, painting and photography; various methods of binding, mounting, lamination, etc. will be demonstrated. Location trips to the Morgan Library and the Center for Book Arts in New York will be conducted. Open to all concentrations in the visual artrs major. ARTS 490 DIY: DEMOCRACY AND DISSENT. This advanced visual arts course focuses on the history of artist response and their role in political and social movements in the 20th and 21st centuries. We will examine the relevant artistic and social movements from relational aesthetics to relational society as well as the strategies and iconography of graffiti and street artists. The social role of inventors, art activists and others in both the cultural history as well as the urban marketplace economy will be examined. ARTS 490 AFRICAN ART AND CULTURE: HISTORIES, THEORIES AND PRACTICE. Professor Offei-Nyako of Ghana will be a visiting artist/scholar at Ramapo and is offering this unique course from his perspective as a well known African artist and professor. Contemporary and historical trends in African art will be examined as well as specific art making techniques and materials unique to Professor Offei-Nyako's personal work and indigenous to the west African environment. This upper level studio course is open to all concentratins in the visual arts major. ARTS 490 ART EDUCATION PORTFOLIO. The Art Education Portfolio course is designed for senior Visual Arts Majors who are enrolled in the Teacher Education Certification Program. To enhance postgraduate job placement, the creation of a comprehensive portfolio is the focus. This includes the development of a statement of teaching philosophy, writing the curriculum vitae, the artist's statement, resume, and biography. The course provides an introduction to the K-12 art curriculum, strategies for integrating art and other disciplines, unit and lesson planning, techniques for the assessment of performance, an overview of successive stages of students' visual communication, and professional teaching standards. Interactive workshops include micro teaching, interviews, choosing appropriate technology, and exhibition of the comprehensive portfolio of personal and student work. ARTS 490 THE DARK SPACE, CHIAROSCURO FROM CARRAVAGGIO TO DAVID LYNCH. This studio based visual arts course will investigate and utilize 'chiaroscuro' (Italian for light and dark), the ultimate 'negative space' of the picture plane: that dark spatial void so intrinsic to the 'realities' of such essential artists as Carravaggio, de la Tour, Goya, Edward Hopper, and filmmakers from Lang and Welles to Lynch and the Quay Brothers. Students will research, design and execute a body of work in their areas of specialization based on this historical and contemporary visual construct. Work will be exhibited in non-traditional environments including photo/video projections and artwork installations in parking garages, landscape sites, and area strip malls. Collaborative performance based events will be encouraged and produced with video and photographic documentation. ARTS 490 ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY; PORTFOLIO DIGITAL PRINT. Students will use the latest series of Epson archival ink jet printers to produce exhibition/portfolio quality digital prints from their negatives, transparencies, digital files. Comparative studies between traditional fiber based silver printing and ink jet printing will be conducted. Students will conceive, plan, proof and output a series of ink jet prints with special emphasis on calibration/color management, paper/ink profiles, and the newest fine arts ink jet papers available. Students must be photoshop proficient.
